Curriculum Leader: Claire White
At Key Stage 4 all students work towards GCSE qualifications in English Language and English Literature.
Our vision is that every student is given high quality teaching and learning opportunities to prepare them for a future in which they have a strong command of the English Language and an appreciation of Literature.
Staff & Facilities
The English Department is located at the heart of the Academy, in the central corridor of ‘B’ or ‘Orange’ block. We have 7 full time English teachers and excellent facilities. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard and we have a designated computer room with desktops and a laptop trolley.
For English Language our students follow the Cambridge syllabus for assessment in May 2014 (Yr11) and November 2014 (Yr10). All students also study for a separate GCSE in English Literature, currently the Edexcel GCSE or KET0 Certificate. Results in June 2013 were our best ever, rising from 34% in 2012 to 71% of students achieving an A*-C grade in English. Our target this year is to achieve 75% A* to C and increase the number of A&A* grades.
*currently a small number of Year 11 students
At Key Stage 3 our focus is on achieving the minimum expected progress from Key Stage 2 for all students with the majority making rapid progress by improving by 3 or more levels across Years 7 to 9.
Obviously our aim is to build the skills needed to be successful at GCSE but also to develop students who have an inquisitive and analytical viewpoint; can express themselves articulately and leave us able to read, interpret and understand the world around them.
