Curriculum Leader: Claire White

“Our best ever results were in 2013. We constantly aim to ‘make our best better’”

At Key Stage 4 all students work towards GCSE qualifications in English Language and English Literature.

Vision Statement

Our vision is that every student is given high quality teaching and learning opportunities to prepare them for a future in which they have a strong command of the English Language and an appreciation of Literature.

Staff & Facilities

The English Department is located at the heart of the Academy, in the central corridor of ‘B’ or ‘Orange’ block. We have 7 full time English teachers and excellent facilities. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard and we have a designated computer room with desktops and a laptop trolley.

KS4 Information

For English Language our students follow the Cambridge [0522] syllabus for assessment in May 2014 (Yr11) and November 2014 (Yr10). All students also study for a separate GCSE in English Literature, currently the Edexcel GCSE or KET0 Certificate. Results in June 2013 were our best ever, rising from 34% in 2012 to 71% of students achieving an A*-C grade in English. Our target this year is to achieve 75% A* to C and increase the number of A&A* grades.
*currently a small number of Year 11 students

KS3 Information

At Key Stage 3 our focus is on achieving the minimum expected progress from Key Stage 2 for all students with the majority making rapid progress by improving by 3 or more levels across Years 7 to 9.
Obviously our aim is to build the skills needed to be successful at GCSE but also to develop students who have an inquisitive and analytical viewpoint; can express themselves articulately and leave us able to read, interpret and understand the world around them.
